In 'The Righteous', Jan Brokken describes the story of the Dutch consul, Jan Zwartendijk. At the beginning of the Second World War, this consul in Kaunas (Lithuania) discovered a way to save the lives of thousands of Jews who had fled from Poland: he issued them a visa for Curaçao. With that, the Jews traveled on the Trans-Siberian Express to Japan, from where they spread all over the world – almost all of them survived the war. In a short time he feverishly issued thousands of visas. Jan Brokken describes the life of Jan Zwartendijk and the fortunes of many of the escaped Jews in a compelling epic, which paints a striking picture of a desperate time. The righteous is a lesson in courage, in making the right choices at the right time.
